Gero Miesenboeck reengineers a brain

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday, 30 November 2010

In the quest to map the brain, many scientists have attempted the incredibly daunting task of recording the activity of each neuron. Gero Miesenboeck works backward -- manipulating specific neurons to figure out exactly what they do, through a series of stunning experiments that reengineer the way fruit flies percieve light.

Motion Forms

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 25 November 2010

Motion Forms is a body of of curved, pleated sculptures, which were hand-folded in watercolour paper through the method of wet folding. The ability to form such surfaces from a flat sheet (which can then be folded back to its original flat state) is a property known as developability...

The sculptures were generated through hands-on experimentation, which began with the folding of a single sheet of A4 paper along several curved score-lines into a shell-like form....read more

SITE: Jay-Z Hits Collection Vol. 1

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Wednesday, 17 November 2010

So Jay-Z launch his new site a week ago, me being me jumped on asap as I nodded my head to the bass lines that awaited me. I typed in the address and hit the return key, how my smile dropped when I saw those revolving hands that reminded me of those free flash animations from 8-10 years ago. Thankfully I'm not on dial up anymore and I didn't have to watch this for too long.... Then came the bass, the bIack and white imagery I expected and I began to enjoy the site once more. One of the better music/artist sites I've seen....

When Print is not dead: Tree of Codes

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 15 November 2010

So you all want a tablet, a reader of sort so you can carry around hundreds of books while you travel.... so do I but don't tell anyone....

I want a book that will suck me in and take me on a journey. Make me feel like I'm doing more than just scrolling or turning a page. The next book will be the best movie I've read.

I've previously read "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "Everything Is Illuminated" by Jonathan Safran Foer and found his style intriguing. Hence I've already got this one on my Christmas wish list, now to let someone know its on there : )

Tree of Codes, a new book by Jonathan Safran Foer, is as much a sculptural object as it is a work of masterful storytelling. With the story literally carved out of another book, Tree of Codes has a different die-cut on every single page. Telling the haunting story of “an enormous last day of life”, it is a book that looks every bit like it feels: unlike anything else.

Star Wars Art: Visions

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Friday, 5 November 2010

Foreword by George Lucas, Introduction by J.W. Rinzler. Available wherever books are sold. Find out more here: http://www.abramsbooks.com/Books/Star...

When Star Wars debuted in 1977, it revolutionized mainstream American filmmaking, transporting fans to new galaxies and introducing them to countless now-classic characters, aliens, planets, and starships. In the decades since, the Star Wars Saga has become a phenomenon impacting cultures across the globe.

Just as George Lucas drew upon the work of N. C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell for his own visual inspiration, he has now invited more than 100 well-known and promising artists to draw upon the entire Star Wars galaxy for inspiration. Star Wars: Visions collects these magnificent artworks for the first time. Featuring pieces by renowned artists such as Amano, Allan R. Banks, Harley Brown, Gary Carter, James Christensen, Michael Coleman, Kinuko Craft, Jim Dietz, Phillipe Druillet, Donato Giancola, Ann Hanson, H. R. Giger, Daniel Greene, Ron Kleeman, Arantzazu Martinez, Syd Mead, Moebius, Paul Oxborough, Alex Ross, Anthony J. Ryder, Dolfi Stoki, William Stout, Dan Thompson, Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo, Scott Waddell, and Jamie Wyeth, Star Wars: Visions is a breakthrough tribute to the worldwide inspiration that is Star Wars.

How Not to Get a Job!

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 1 November 2010

A week ago now I got a call amongst the numerous ping of new email and every other bleep beep that goes on in the studio. The entire conversation lasted only a few seconds...

Ring Ring...

Me: Hello R27
Caller: Got any jobs going?
Me: Not at present ca,
- and before I had time to say anything else
Caller: Cheers Mate.

Dead tone......

Now I don't know if this was a joke, if it was fair play. However if it wasn't I hope you're reading this...

I'm not your mate and I don't care to be, I could have been your future employer for all you know.

How about you introduce yourself by telling me your name, what you do and what kind of work you're looking for and then waiting for me to ask you something in return. Even if there wasn't a suitable position/opening for you now they may be next month. So you could have told me what you were interested in, left your details with me and/or emailed your details over with your CV. At least I could if I wanted to, get in touch with you again. What you left behind was an anonymous memory of a call without making a connection, maybe it's best I don't know who you are... You sounded like you were in your 20s so you do have time to change, please do so quickly!

Is it just me or am I asking for too much?

Whatever area of employment you're looking for manners and communication skills go a long way. It's what we hear or see before we've even met that can make a difference and it won't be found in your portfolio.

Don't forget to focus on your basic skills.... creating great designs is only half of your job for the most part it's about communicating, negotiating, building relationships that have a chance of lasting and leaving crumbs that someone will hopefully want to follow.

Your thoughts?
Any similar experiences?

Please tell me this doesn't happen too often and restore my faith in people....
