The illustrator Frank Höhne explains how to find joy in working as an illustrator.

More About This Book
The delight with which Frank Höhne draws radiates from each of his illustrations and his strange humor is contagious. His style is idiosyncratic and sometimes childishly naïve. Höhne admits that “I simply do what I want to do,” but he does this so well that he has established himself as one of Germany’s leading illustrators in only a short period of time. His clients include international brands such as BMW Mini, Nike, and Aveda, as well as a broad range of German newspapers and magazines.
In The Book of Bock Frank Höhne offers his own unique perspective on how to become an illustrator and, once one does, how to keep the joy in one’s work alive over time. The hilarious visual journey is great fun for all readers—whether they work creatively or not.
Frank Höhne is inspired by the things that make him human. As he puts it, “a colonoscopy gives me eight times more input than a visit to a museum for applied something or other.”

DESIGNED BY HAT-TRICK, THE FOUR STAMPS FUSE PICTURES OF ATHLETES WITH LONDON’S ICONIC STRUCTURES.
The summer Olympics kick off in London today. To mark the historic occasion, Royal Mail introduces a limited-edition line of collectible stamps that pay tribute not only to outstanding athleticism but to the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
The four first-class stamps visually blend dynamic shots of athletes (a diver, fencer, runners, and a cyclist) with formal images of architectural monuments. The front wheel of the bicycle, for instance, becomes the London Eye Ferris wheel, and the circular path of a track flows seamlessly into the curves of the Populous-designed Olympic stadium.

GUSTAVO SOUSA USES THE "BEAUTIFUL AND ELEGANT" LOGO TO SHOW DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES.
The Olympics promise many things--triumph of the human spirit, amazing athletic prowess, upsets and underdogs--but the most modern games are ultimately nothing if not a massive, global spectacle. Gustavo Sousa, a painter and creative director at Mother’s London office, was interested in exploring behind the pomp and circumstance. “Events like these can be a good time for reflection,” Sousa tells Co.Design.
Oceaniaeuropeamericaasiaafrica illustrates stripped-down statistics from each region through simple scale shifts of the tournament’s iconic quintet of overlapping loops.“The rings represent healthy competition and union, but we know the world isn’t perfect. Maybe understanding the differences is the first step to try to make things more equal.”

Bruce Mau Design (BMD) was approached by radio program Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen in the US to take part in its series called Redesigns.
“At the suggestion of a listener in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Studio 360 put the focus on redesigning Canada. But the ‘design exercise’ is not really about changing Canada, said Alexis Green, marketing and PR manager at BMD, as much as it’s about changing America’s view of Canada.”

Aardvark Letterpress is a true and classic printing business. All of the letterpress printing is performed onsite at Aardvark Letterpress by Luis, his sons Brooks and Cary, and their lead pressman, Oscar Gomez. Aardvark still has the old Chandler & Price, but has added two 10 x 15 Heidelberg windmill presses, a Miehle V-50 vertical press, and a Superior handpress.
Aardvark Letterpress is also unique in that, unlike most letterpress printers, Aardvark has full typesetting capabilities. As former typographers, Aardvark Letterpress still has its own fully operational Linotype machine, two Ludlow typesetting machines, and an extensive collection of hand-set type. Aardvark Letterpress has more than 200 typestyles that can be set "in house" and used in the letterpress job.

Also watch a short film by XK9 and see what happened when Josh Zucker, Matt Sessions and Bill Dawson met at Aardvark Letterpress in downtown Los Angeles. Cary and Brooks Ocon and Pressman Bill Berkuta agreed to let them to get in their way while the XK9 business cards were being printed. This film is a small document of Aardvark's excellence and what happened that day. (Film at the end....

Under their group moniker Numen, Industrial designers Sven Jonke, Christoph Katzler and Nikola Radeljković focus on experimental architecture and spatial installations, meanwhile concentrating on designing objects as their second alias For Use. The Croatian/Austrian collective might be best known for the huge accessible tape installations they realized in Melbourne, Berlin, Vienna, Frankfurt and Belgrade so far. We met Christoph Katzler in the Belgian town of Hasselt where he talked about the evolution of their true grids from ephemeral tape to permanent net (materialized in the Net Z33), the social aspect of their work as featured in "Learn for Life: New Architecture for New Learning" and why hell doesn't need to be hot to give you an idea of infinity.
