Volvo - Drive Around the World

by R27 CREATIVELAB

Drive Around The World is a game based on the philosophy that any given person is connected to the rest of the world's population by only six degrees of separation. The social experiment encourages people to get in touch with Facebook contacts to virtually drive around the world in 80 days. Participants will drive the C30 DRIVe for 1.333 KM - the distance the car can cover on one tank of fuel - before passing it on to a Facebook friend.

The trailer is directed for Euro RSCG 4D for the launch of the Facebook game. The trailer illustrates the Volvo C30 in an adventurous trip around the world where it passes from friend to friend. During the trip the car passes several landmarks in a hand sketch animation style. Some live footage is integrated to highlight the car.

‘The Guggenheim’ by Abbott Miller

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 18 January 2010

The Guggenheim: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Making of the Modern Museum is the definitive chronicle of the creation of the iconic building, the final project of its renowned architect. Designed by Abbott Miller, who has a long-standing relationship with the museum, the book has been published to commemorate the Guggenheim’s 50th anniversary and is a companion volume to Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, the blockbuster exhibition that became the museum’s most popular show ever during its run in New York this summer. (The exhibition has now traveled to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, where it opened last week.) Miller describes the project as the ultimate souvenir book, and it has been designed to captivate architectural aficionados and casual visitors alike.

Red Spark Studio by Chris Rossi

by R27 CREATIVELAB

The story of the girl, the studio and the vision behind the work...

Words from Chris Rossi. "Ever since I was introduced to it in a small yet wonderful studio in Florence, Italy while studying abroad more than seventeen years ago, metalsmithing has been an artform that has been dear to my heart.

Five years ago, I found my way back to the metalsmithing studio. It serves as a creative respit from the stresses and deadlines of the corporate design world. The pieces you see in redspark studio are the fruit of this ever-growing escape.

Limited edition, hand fabricated, custom jewelry and metalwork, inspired by the elegance of modern lines and organic forms.

Their purpose: to spark a smile, to reflect the warm light of the sun and the beauty of the person wearing them."

Principles of Great Design: Craftsmanship

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Saturday, 16 January 2010

Extract from a great post on designinformer.com

I love beautiful things. There’s very little in the world that takes my breath away quite like an object that was lovingly crafted, built with care and passion, and presented with the sort of pride that befits a marvelously well-made item.

That which is beautiful is increasingly difficult to come by in a world where a premium is placed on speed, and things are made to be disposable. We often sacrifice real craftsmanship at the altar of expediency. While we are still capable of recognizing the value of something that has been expertly constructed, we often choose the cheap and easy option instead.

For years, I shaved my face with a disposable razor. It did the job just fine. It was straightforward and easy. It even looked flashy. And every few weeks I’d pop off the disposable end, throw it away, and replace it with a ridiculously expensive new cartridge. I blew hundreds of dollars on razor cartridges over the years. And I never got shaves that I felt were perfect.

About two years ago, I switched over to a beautifully crafted and expertly honed straight razor. I bought a hand-made heirloom razor strop, an excellent badger-hair brush, and some high-quality shave cream. I’ve never had better shaves in my life. The process has changed from an occasional annoyance, to a pleasurable ritual. I have tools that I will have for the rest of my life. Tools that will, likely, outlive me. They work better than my old tools. And, in the long run, they’re cheaper than my old disposables.

The difference in the level of craftsmanship between my old disposable razor and my new straight razor is vast. There is a significant and noticeable difference between cheap, mass-produced products, and hand-crafted, carefully detailed ones.

The standard line in this industry is that most clients don’t really know the difference between good design and great design. While that may be true, I contend that it is always possible to detect the hand of a dedicated artisan in her creations. To that end, I want to examine what we as designers can do to bring quality craftsmanship to our work.

N Building - QR Code Building

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Wednesday, 13 January 2010

The QR Code takes over a building's facade.

N Building is a commercial structure located near Tachikawa station amidst a shopping district. Being a commercial building signs or billboards are typically attached to its facade which we feel undermines the structures' identity. As a solution we thought to use a QR Code as the facade itself. By reading the QR Code with your mobile device you will be taken to a site which includes up to date shop information. In this manner we envision a cityscape unhindered by ubiquitous signage and also an improvement to the quality and accuracy of the information itself.

December 15th, 2009 we held an opening which included the limited release of an iPhone application made specifically for N Building. If a QR Code is static, what could we do with a dynamic device like the iPhone? Our proposed vision of the future is one where the facade of the building disappears, showing those inside who want to be seen. As you press on the characters their comments made on online appear in speech bubbles. You can also browse shop information, make reservations and download coupons. Rather than broadly tagging, we display information specific to the building in a manner in which the virtual (iPhone) serves to enhance the physical (N Building). Our goal is to provide an incentive to visit the space and a virtual connection to space without necessarily being present.
