Responsive Comping: Obtaining Signoff with Mockups

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Wednesday, 17 October 2012

Responsive-comping-obtaining-signoff-with-mockups

If you’re making websites, chances are you’ve given some thought to what constitutes a responsive-friendly design process—and you’ve probably found that adding a mockup for every breakpoint isn’t a sustainable approach.

At least, that’s what happened at my company, Bearded, where we had spent years creating websites in Photoshop or Illustrator, having those mockups approved by our clients, then recreating those designs with CSS.

Until now. A few months ago, we stopped making static image-based mockups in favor of designing with code. This is not a new idea—heck, Andy Clarke was arguing for in-browser design in 2008. But new or not, you may still be mystified at where to begin—or feel unmoored and disoriented at the prospect of giving up the approach you’ve long relied on.

But fear not, gentle reader. Let’s take a look at our new mockup-less web design process and see just how easy it can be to get that Photoshop monkey off your back, and have a fresh new beginning with your old friend the web browser.

A Tribute To Dead Logos From The Past: Logo R.I.P.

by R27 CREATIVELAB

A CELEBRATION, OF SORTS, FOR LOGOS CREATED FOR AT&T, PANAM, KODAK, BY LEGENDS SUCH AS LIKE PAUL RAND, SAUL BASS AND LANCE WYMAN.

What makes a logo super effective? According to Declan Stone, minimalism has the maximum effect. “In general, great logos contain only one graphic idea or one gimmick--they try to express no more than one attribute and support a single aspect of positioning,” he tells Co.Design. Even the best marks must be attached to a successful company to survive, however. Almost a decade ago, Declan and Garech Stone--aka Amsterdam’s Stone Twins--released Logo R.I.P., a hardback memorial to out of commission icons, and the book was rereleased this month with a series of new entries. (You can buy it at Amazon for $15.)

The explosion of the internet over the past 20 years has led to the development of one of the newest creative mediums: the website. Web designers have adapted through the technological developments of html, CSS, Flash, and JavaScript, and have mastered the balance between creativity and usability. Now with the advance of mobile, the greatest websites have taken user experience and responsive design to the next level, and continue our evolution from print to a digital world.

Insites: The Book from Elliot Jay Stocks

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Wednesday, 19 September 2012

Insites: The Book is a beautiful, limited edition, 256-page book presented in a numbered, foil-blocked presentation box. This very special publication features no code snippets and no design tips; instead, 20 deeply personal conversations with the biggest names in the web community.

"Over the course of six months, we travelled the US and the UK to meet with Tina Roth Eisenberg, Jason Santa Maria, Cameron Moll, Ethan Marcotte, Alex Hunter, Brendan Dawes, Simon Collison, Dan Rubin, Andy McGloughlin, Kevin Rose and Daniel Burka, Josh Brewer, Ron Richards, Trent Walton, Ian Coyle, Mandy Brown, Sarah Parmenter, Jim Coudal, Jeffrey Zeldman, Tim Van Damme, and Jon Hicks.
We delved into their personal journeys, big wins, and lessons learned, along with the kind of tales you’ll never hear on a conference stage. Each and every person we spoke to has an amazing story to tell — a story we can all relate to, because even the biggest successes have the smallest, most humble of beginnings."

Frank Höhne – Philosophy of Bock

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday, 7 August 2012

Frank Höhne brought us into his home and studio space in Berlin to show how (and why) he works as an illustrator. Pen in hand, Höhne works quickly, intuitively, and spontaneously, rarely with a plan, and always with his quirky and easygoing sense of humor. Joy, or “Bock,” as it’s said colloquially in German, is an important aspect of life and work for Höhne—something which he hilariously describes in his first monograph, The Book of Bock. It’s this combination of idiosyncratic humor, refreshingly childlike spontaneity, and down-to-earth nature that has allowed Höhne to quickly establish himself as one of Germany’s leading illustrators, with clients including BMW Mini, Nike, Aveda, as well as a broad range of German newspapers and magazines.

Höhne’s first monograph, The Book of Bock, is now avaialbe from Gestalten.

More About This Book

The delight with which Frank Höhne draws radiates from each of his illustrations and his strange humor is contagious. His style is idiosyncratic and sometimes childishly naïve. Höhne admits that “I simply do what I want to do,” but he does this so well that he has established himself as one of Germany’s leading illustrators in only a short period of time. His clients include international brands such as BMW Mini, Nike, and Aveda, as well as a broad range of German newspapers and magazines.

In The Book of Bock Frank Höhne offers his own unique perspective on how to become an illustrator and, once one does, how to keep the joy in one’s work alive over time. The hilarious visual journey is great fun for all readers—whether they work creatively or not.

Frank Höhne is inspired by the things that make him human. As he puts it, “a colonoscopy gives me eight times more input than a visit to a museum for applied something or other.”

Bill Moggridge — The Design of Service and Education

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 19 July 2012

As founder of the legendary Silicon Valley-based design company IDEO and current director of the Smithsonian Institution's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in NYC, Bill Moggridge surely knows a thing or two about the value, function, and importance of design. Gestalten.tv met the man who designed the first ever laptop to realize why today's increasing services are a design opportunity, to discover the richness of variety of the Cooper-Hewitt's historical collection, and to learn why design in the US still needs to get more recognition.

Valentina typeface [free font]

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday, 1 May 2012

Media_httpbehancevoll_dbjhi

Valentina typeface is a sincere tribute to my grandmother in the form of typography and therefore bears her name. Valentina is a classic didone that follows some of the canons proposed by Bodoni in the eighteenth century but incorporates many of the characteristics of the antique Spanish punches of the time. It is a complete font of 457 glyphs, in which there are 125 alternative lower cases or the 46 ligatures. You can download for free this font.

Shape of Design by Frank Chimero

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 23 April 2012

The long awaited book from Frank Chimero is now available.

The Shape of Design is a treatise on design that frames the practice as a way we engage with one another and the world. It is the book I wish I had when I was a student to teach me about objectives and to ask Why. It's the one I wish I had yesterday to remind me of my responsibility to my craft. Most importantly, it's the book I'll want tomorrow to remind me of the potential of every little bit.

What is the primary quality of great design? It moves. It moves us emotionally, travels from person to person, and takes us toward something better. Designers connect and build bridges that lead us to new places and expand what is possible. We tell productive untruths, then toil to make them reality. The practice shifts like a shadow and moves the target. When it does so, the products of design achieve a resonance. They get passed on like a story and turn into a gift.

I was lucky enough along with the Kickstarter backers to get the ebook version to read ahead of time and it's worth getting your hands on it while you can. The launch of the book also brings with it a few little extras which are available via the shop here - http://shop.frankchimero.com.

Five letterpress prints from the shape of design. Limited edition of 50.

The development of the signage typeface Wayfinding Sans Pro by Ralf Herrmann

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 19 April 2012

A typeface on a sign that is read from 300 yards has different requirements than a typeface read in a magazine, from your armchair. And even if the typefaces are designed specifically for signage, they are often a local solution that just doesn’t work everywhere. For example, the Transport typeface used in the U.K. is a very good and legible design, but it is designed for English words and names and is far too wide for the generally longer names of German cities. Another example is the Clearview typeface with its extreme x-height, which works on American road signs, but not so well for languages using numerous diacritical marks. So in the end, for every typeface I checked and tested, I discovered both advantages and disadvantages. There was not a single typeface that I could recommend for signage in every situation.
