Ordinary Books Transformed into Charming Little Buildings

Dutch artist Frank Halmans transforms ordinary stacks of books into charming little buildings. For his series Built of Books, Halmans carves squares and rectangles into old textbooks and binds them altogether like a quaint little town made of rows of narrow buildings. Each quadrangle incision serves as a window or door. The artist is even careful enough to include a variety of window frame and doorway designs.

The artist Tessa Farmer creates magical worlds ruled by minuscule fairy skeletons, who are not just mischievous but downright evil. Her striking sculptures, which are made from insects, animal taxidermy, and plant roots, depict narratives that are no doubt dark and infused with maliciousness, yet their savagery is, for Farmer, an expression of a raw survival instinct inherent in us all. “Using a process that could be the new definition of meticulous, Korean sculptor Seung Mo Park creates giant ephemeral portraits by cutting layer after layer of wire mesh. Each work begins with a photograph which is superimposed over layers of wire with a projector, then using a subtractive technique Park slowly snips away areas of mesh.”

"I spent some time in the States last month and before the trip, I thought I'd do a portrait of a recognisable American in memory of my trip to the States. I was there to attend the EG Conference where I was invited as one of the speakers. I'll blog about that experience soon - it was amaaazing - and here's my mum's post about it on her blog.
I've been working on portraits of Chinese figures so far because I'm living in China and I thought it'd be a great way to learn more about the culture and people here through researching about them and utilising local materials to go about my art projects.
I was going to ask friends on Facebook to suggest a American I should paint - then I thought - hold on - Why not the creator (or co-creator!) of Facebook himself?! And what if I played around with the words 'Face' and 'Book'? ...oh wow...was I being PUNNY?!
I liked the idea but didn't know how to go about using books for the portrait. But inspiration came to me one day as I was working on some facade systems in HASSELL, the architecture company that I work for."

Today we want to show you cute steampunk sculptures. In 1991 artist Jim Mullan got collection of old original decoys and they were a studio decoration for many years. In 2006 birds from this collection became the basis of new collection “Songbirds” containing small and big fun steampunk birds. “Each bird is hand made in our Florida studio using old carvings as our models. The unusual relics we use such as croquet balls, binoculars and old toys give each inspiring bird their own personality. These sculptures give life to the once forgotten pieces of yesterday.” At the moment Jim Mullan and his wife Tori produce these steampunk sculptures under the brand Mullanium.

Ampersand is a collaborative, student-initiated news-magazine for the Kansas City Art Institute. As students, we felt that there was a communication gap between us, the faculty, staff, and the surrounding community. Thus, Ampersand was born!

architectural space of the grand palais in paris. the sheer monumental scale of the building provided the inspiration for a big idea: monumenta.
this year, indian-born, british-based artist anish kapoor created a temporary, site-specific installation inside the nave of the glass-domed hall.
the space was originally unveiled at the 1900 universal exhibition.

Motion Forms is a body of of curved, pleated sculptures, which were hand-folded in watercolour paper through the method of wet folding. The ability to form such surfaces from a flat sheet (which can then be folded back to its original flat state) is a property known as developability...
The sculptures were generated through hands-on experimentation, which began with the folding of a single sheet of A4 paper along several curved score-lines into a shell-like form....read more

Yuima Nakazato has returned to Tokyo after just finishing his degree in fashion design at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. Yuima creates 2 dimensional shapes which mould around the body resulting in some fantastic wearable sculptures and remind me of a futuristic body armour. Jewellery, clothes and shoes are all in his portfolio and at the tender age of 23 years old I wonder what he may show us in the coming years....

Dutch designer Iris van Herpen takes inspiration from industrial smoke in her latest collection.
Dazed Digital: What was the inspiration for your collection SS09 collection 'Refinery Smoke'?
Iris Van Herpen: I have been passing refineries many times in my life, the grey, tragic look of it inspires me, especially the beautiful fluently crawling smoke, which is so beautiful when looking at it, but you get this stange feeling because it should not be there. I tried to capture the look of the industrial smoke together with the contradiction of the refinery. I also wonder if we will always be wearing clothes/fabrics, or would it be possible in future to wear other substances like smoke?

Zaha Hadid, a notable architect which is recently famed for her Chanel Mobile Art collaboration linked up with Brazilian eco-footwear brand Melissa to create a shoe. The melissa + Zaha Hadid shoe will be available in eight colorways and sold exclusively at Dover Street Market come September with a kick-off party at London Fashion Week.
