Impressions by Aardvark Letterpress

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday, 24 July 2012

Aardvark Letterpress is a true and classic printing business. All of the letterpress printing is performed onsite at Aardvark Letterpress by Luis, his sons Brooks and Cary, and their lead pressman, Oscar Gomez. Aardvark still has the old Chandler & Price, but has added two 10 x 15 Heidelberg windmill presses, a Miehle V-50 vertical press, and a Superior handpress.

Aardvark Letterpress is also unique in that, unlike most letterpress printers, Aardvark has full typesetting capabilities. As former typographers, Aardvark Letterpress still has its own fully operational Linotype machine, two Ludlow typesetting machines, and an extensive collection of hand-set type. Aardvark Letterpress has more than 200 typestyles that can be set "in house" and used in the letterpress job.

Also watch a short film by XK9 and see what happened when Josh Zucker, Matt Sessions and Bill Dawson met at Aardvark Letterpress in downtown Los Angeles. Cary and Brooks Ocon and Pressman Bill Berkuta agreed to let them to get in their way while the XK9 business cards were being printed. This film is a small document of Aardvark's excellence and what happened that day. (Film at the end....

Andrew Losowsky – Ready For Press

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 19 July 2012

Although the way we read may change, our passion for the written word is left unaffected by format. Who would know better than NYC-based editor, writer, and consultant Andrew Losowksy, whom we met at the offices of The Huffington Post, where he is Books Editor. Losowksy has conceived and contributed to numerous books, including Gestalten's Turning Pages and Visual Storytelling, as well as We Love Magazines and We Make Magazines. In our Gestalten.tv feature, Losowsky talks about the various methods of storytelling in the digital age and why hitting the right note on the web doesn't always translate into a compelling print product (and vice versa).

Happy Days: When Letraset Was King

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Friday, 11 May 2012

Fortunately, that first time I was using the best: dry-transfer sheets from Letraset, a British company that made (and still makes) a variety of graphic art supplies. It was the quality brand of the industry and you couldn’t call yourself professional without using at least one of the company’s products. The scans in today's column are from a 1970 and 1973 catalog.

Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum, est. 1880

The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum, located in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production, and printing of wood type. With 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns, Hamilton’s collection is one of the premier wood type collections in the world. In addition to wood type, the Museum is home to an array of advertising woodcuts from the 1930s through the 1970s. A “living” museum, Hamilton hosts numerous cutting demonstrations and printing workshops for visitors.

Shape of Design by Frank Chimero

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 23 April 2012

The long awaited book from Frank Chimero is now available.

The Shape of Design is a treatise on design that frames the practice as a way we engage with one another and the world. It is the book I wish I had when I was a student to teach me about objectives and to ask Why. It's the one I wish I had yesterday to remind me of my responsibility to my craft. Most importantly, it's the book I'll want tomorrow to remind me of the potential of every little bit.

What is the primary quality of great design? It moves. It moves us emotionally, travels from person to person, and takes us toward something better. Designers connect and build bridges that lead us to new places and expand what is possible. We tell productive untruths, then toil to make them reality. The practice shifts like a shadow and moves the target. When it does so, the products of design achieve a resonance. They get passed on like a story and turn into a gift.

I was lucky enough along with the Kickstarter backers to get the ebook version to read ahead of time and it's worth getting your hands on it while you can. The launch of the book also brings with it a few little extras which are available via the shop here - http://shop.frankchimero.com.

Five letterpress prints from the shape of design. Limited edition of 50.

The Memo Book Archive

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Saturday, 21 April 2012

For the release of our 14th seasonal limited edition, we decided it was about time to get back to our roots. Field Notes in general, and the new “National Crop Edition” specifically, owe their existence to a tradition of promotional memo books distributed to American farmers over the last hundred years by seed, tractor, and other agricultural companies.

Field Notes co-founder Aaron Draplin has been collecting these for years, “rescuing them” from obscurity. He talks about Field Notes’ ancestry in this film, From Seed, and we’re happy to present an ever-growing collection of our “family tree” for your perusal. The “National Crop Edition” is available now in custom boxed 6-packs and as part of a yearly COLORS SUBSCRIPTION.

Field Notes Brand: From Seed

by R27 CREATIVELAB

The ever amazing Field Notes have just launched a new collection of memo books, The National Crop Edition, which brings them back to their roots. The whole Field Notes brand is inspired by the long tradition of promotional books distributed to American farmers across the 19th Century and this particular collection celebrates this with a series of books dedicated to farmers and the 6 leading crops they grow. Using 7 different paper stocks, each book is a different colour and full of information about American corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, cotton and sorghum.
