DigitalSelecta.com - Beta testing

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 5 April 2010

For the past 6-8months we've been working on the look and feel of a new Online Live Broadcast DJ Software - Digital Selecta with Rajesh Pancholi | R27.CREATIVELAB. So whether you're into Indie, Dancehall or Hip Hop, feel like a little Jazz (niceeee) or thrashing out some Heavy Metal this is for you. Mix a few tracks for your own pleasure or broadcast live to an online audience, its up to you.

Right now we need your help, while we continue to hide in the basement with only candlelight and takeaway food, as we tweak and adjust the code and continue to revisit the interface, we need feedback!

Currently DigitalSelecta is at a usable stage but some of the functions are incomplete. The interface is also being modified as we introduce new functions. The public beta will be limited to 100 people and will be ready as soon as changes have been made to the streaming server. Beta testing is very important to us, we want a flawless product for our customers. As a beta tester we will be offering you a free copy of DigitalSelecta based on the amount of testing you carry out.

What is DigitalSelecta?
DigitalSelecta is the brain child of myself (Andrew Georgiades) and my good friend DJ Gary Strife. Strife is a vinyl dj through and through, he will only use cdj's if the venue lacks turntables. He comes from the oldskool Jungle days of 1994 where vinyl was the medium of choice and vinyl dub plates ruled the scene. DigitalSelecta aims to give the dj that vinyl feel in digital format. It is never going to be like the real thing but as far as software only solutions go, it's probably the closest thing yet. DigitalSelecta's layout is also key to the vinyl feel. Everything is laid out like the real thing making the workflow of mixing almost identical to using the hardware equivalent. You have your traditional mixer with cross fader, eq's and pitch. You can scratch your music by manually turning the platter just like you would on a turntable and the resulting sound is nothing short of that nostalgic vinyl pitch bending sound. Nudging the vinyl using the mouse wheel is almost like pushing the platter, the hand action is the same and it brings you that much closer to the real thing. During our testing, people listening have told that it really does sound like vinyl. Most Dj's are not perfect in their mixing abilities but this is what makes people listening realize that the dj really is mixing. You wont find and beat matching tools inside DigitalSelecta, you as a dj must get mix in time yourself and what a good feeling it is when you master it. If DS done it for you, anyone could mix and the art of mixing would be lost forever. When listening to a dj playing vinyl, you will often hear a song pitch bend slightly where the dj is trying to get both songs at the same speed. This sound is priceless and it is what makes dj'ing vinyl style so good. It's like a formula one driver loosing grip on a sharp bend and fighting to get the car straight again. You wont find traction control in a formula one car, what's the point? As a side note, a strange phenomena occurred during the construction of DigitalSelecta. I had never played with vinyl and Gary put me to the test. We were at his house one afternoon and he told me to have a go on his vinyl turntables. Well i was shocked to say the least. Within 20 minutes i managed to mix a few tunes together and it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. The workflow really was the same and made us realize just how well we managed to simulate the process in software.

DigitalSelecta also includes a very nice mic stage with talk over and 3 band eq. You can pull off a professional radio show and people listening would think you had thousands of pounds of equipment in front of you. DigitalSelecta is also the first application of it's kind to offer hassle free live broadcasting across the internet. No setting up servers or configurations of any kind. It's all done for you, you just click the broadcast button and post a link to your preferred social networking site and away you go! As a customer, you will get a free amount of air time every month but there's more... If your show is popular, you will be featured on the front page of the DigitalSelecta website (in development as we speak) and you will be awarded extra airtime and more listener slots. We want DigitalSelecta to build communities where people come to listen to their favorite dj.

What are you trying to achieve with DigitalSelecta?
We are all about providing tools that make the process fun and intuitive whatever the process might be. In the case of DigitalSelecta, your dj'ing and your actually doing it yourself without cheating. You will almost definitely feel a sense of joy when you manage to pull off your first set.

As I mentioned before right now we need your help, while we continue to hide in the basement we need your feedback! Be part of the DigitalSelecta Community, Sign up at www.digitalselecta.com
