Penguin Books - Designer Coralle Bickford-Smith

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday 27 October 2009

They say don't judge a book by its cover.... I say why the hell not! Below the simplicity of treatment is perfect and makes the books very 'pickable' (is that a real word?)

Penguin books senior cover designer Coralie Bickford-Smith's intricately patterned hardback classics will hit the U.S. tomorrow. The series was originally released in the U.K. last fall and distributed exclusively through Waterstones.

Coralie Bickford-Smith is a senior cover designer at Penguin Books, where she has created several series designs. by R27 CREATIVELAB on Friday 23 October 2009

I didn't think I would be talking about Windows 7 but to my surprise here goes. Visually stunning in my eyes...

Microsoft asked 72andSunny (a full-service design and advertising agency based in LA and Amsterdam) to bring an artistic edge to Windows 7. The agency commissioned a dozen talents from the art, illustration and design worlds to create a series of unique wallpapers with which '7' users could customize their desktops.

Tate Online: How It Is

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday 15 October 2009

A dark and mysterious journey with Polish artist Miroslaw Balka and Champagne Valentine.

Champagne Valentine worked closely with Miroslaw Balka to create a mysterious experience for his current exhibition at the Tate Modern, How It Is, the tenth commission in The Unilever Series for the Turbine Hall. The theme comes from the artwork itself. It feels like a 3D shoot 'em up game as you venture round dark corners for Miroslaw to reveal his inspirations and his own background.

Champagne Valentine combined Flash and Papervision technologies to create the experience. Tate will also soon be releasing a partner iPhone app, which mimics the How It Is website but will also offer location-based gameplay. Using the iPhone's GPS system, the app will add a whole new level to the digital experience when users are in the vicinity of the Tate Modern.

I'm broke! - Handmade Typography

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday 12 October 2009

I wanted to share this handmade typography with you. It's made entirely out of public transit tickets in a collaboration between Holiday Matinee and Home-Ec. “The messaging was intentional to let people know that while this economy sucks, it's ‘gonna be OK. We're ‘gonna get through this,” explains Dave Brown of Holiday Matinee.

Thanks to Danielle for bringing it to my attention

Country codes of the world

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Friday 9 October 2009

At the end of every URL or email is a top level domain. Although .com is the world’s most popular it is far from alone. The Country Codes of the World map includes 245 country codes, which encompasses all United Nations countries as well as numerous islands and territories. You never know, this might make the perfect gift for your geeky cousin.

At the end of every URL and email address is a top-level domain (TLD). Although .com is the world’s most popular TLD, it is far from alone. There are more than 260 TLDs in use around the world, most of which are country code top-level domains (ccTLDs). The Country Codes of the World map includes 245 country codes, which encompasses all United Nations countries as well as numerous islands and territories. Each two-digit code is aligned over the country it represents and is color coded with the legend below for quick and easy reference. Each ccTLD is sized relative to the population of the country or territory, with the exception of China and India, which were restrained by 30% to fit the layout. At the other end of the spectrum, the smallest type size used reflects those countries with fewer than 10 million residents.

So Touch - Intelligent Surfaces

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Wednesday 7 October 2009

Julien Lescure is the co-founder and CEO of So touch, the new born creative multi-touch company.

Tired of seeing the great level of digital creativity and digital marketing opportunities trapped into the frame of the personal computer, me and my partner in business decided to surf the multi-touch wave 6 months ago creating So touch and unleash the digital world into the real one! Three weeks ago we've done a great multi-touch installation for the onedotzero festival in London, which is a performance from all point of views (technical, creative and human) and we really want the world to know it!

So touch, the newborn creative multi-touch company, has this summer collaborated with onedotzero, the famous London based contemporary, digital arts organization, to design and develop the most creative and fully featured multi-touch application ever created as of today.

So touch installation at the onedotzero VIP launch party in Shoreditch, London.

The application, hosted at the BFI Southbank in London for 7 days, ran at 40fps on a Mindstorm Aurora table and offered a new, interactive way to explore the onedotzero2009 festival programme. The whole application has been designed, developed and tested in only 3 weeks by the So touch team, leveraging the unique So touch Flash AS3 multi-touch framework.

This multi-touch multi-user search engine, allows an unlimited number of users to filterthe festival programme at the same time, aggregating keywords from 3 different categories: time of the day (morning, afternoon, evening), days of the festival (Wednesday to Sunday), type of performance (Screenings, Feature films, Talks, etc.).

Detail of the So touch multi-touch multi-user search engine.

A typical search is performed by dragging and dropping keywords to create a personal search disc where keywords-associated results are displayed. For example, aggregating keywords as Screening + Monday + Afternoon, display the list of screenings on Monday afternoon.

Thanks to the physics rules integrated into the So touch Flash AS3 framework, the personal search discs, could shock and bumped into each other favouring social interactions between users.

The description panel for each event includes: timing, description, pictures and videos that can all be manipulated with multi touch gestures, as well as, the ability to invite a friend or remind themselves about an event, sending event-related emails. Also, the application featured the ability to consult information about onedotzero and So touch, and to register to their respective newsletters, using a scalable keyboard.
