Ian Bibleys "Red Racer"

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 29 March 2010

The kind folk at Creative Review sent out to me an original print of Ian Bibley's "Red Racer".

To Neil Ayres and CR Team I salute you! Especially as it sat on the doormat next to the latest issue of Creative Review (now in a new and sparkly resized, reformatted and redesigned look) - Subscribe and take a look for yourselves.

Back to the "Red Racer". What I especially like is the simplicity of the image and vibrancy of colour. Take a closer look and you'll see that every line stroke and it's weight has been thought about along with the attention to detail, illustrating just enough and leaving out the rest. just enough detail to give you a clean crisp image. Lovely colours used throughout his portfolio. At first glance you may say "I could do that" but look closely and you'll see why the these images work.

Karl Sims - Evolved Virtual Creatures Simulation

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 25 March 2010

This video shows results from a research project involving simulated Darwinian evolutions of virtual block creatures. A population of several hundred creatures is created within a supercomputer, and each creature is tested for their ability to perform a given task, such the ability to swim in a simulated water environment. Those that are most successful survive, and their virtual genes containing coded instructions for their growth, are copied, combined, and mutated to make offspring for a new population. The new creatures are again tested, and some may be improvements on their parents. As this cycle of variation and selection continues, creatures with more and more successful behaviors can emerge.

Each day, we are surrounded by seemingly insignificant objects, taking them from one place to the other, or leaving them on a table for weeks, without paying any attention to them. We ignore or forget them, using things only when we need to, making sure they don’t interfere or inhabit our space. But what if they were not so stable and subservient? What if they could swivel, bounce or even fly. And what if they did so all at the same time?

We want to imagine a place where objects could live and move, harmoniously, and of their own accord. Without interfering with each other these objects would bounce, roll, turn and cross each other’s paths.

This experiment is about re-discovering our daily surroundings.

This is the making of the interactive video that was originally made for If You Could Collaborate exhibition. Each object is assigned to a letter on the keyboard, and can be activated or deactivated at any time. The online version will be soon available to play with at dansedance.com

PIRATES!!! "The Curse of the Evil Eye"

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 22 March 2010

by Rémy Tornior & Yves Geleyn

Yves Geleyn collaborates with illustrator Remy Tornior on a short film, Pirates!!! The Curse of the Evil Eye, a tale set on the high seas, about an epic battle of good against evil. Yves, having always been a huge fan of Remy’s work, wanted to work on a project with him for some time. Then a joke about a Cyclops sparked the idea for the animation and the story began to take shape. Starting in September of 2006 and finishing in February of 2010, averaging about 52 seconds of animation per year, it was a true labor of love. Yves and Remy had no budget for this project and worked on the film in any spare moment they could find.

The concept of this piece was to mix the two worlds of Yves and Remy. With great attention to detail, Yves created the background and models, while Remy designed the characters. They bought two model ships on eBay, which Yves shot against a blue screen. Next, he meticulously added all the elements, animated Remy's designs and composited everything together. Then, they turned to Francois Montmayeur, currently a musician at L'Opera de Lyon, to create an epic score and sound design to create a truly cinematic experience.

Yves took a realistic approach when it came to the voices: he wanted Dutch voices for the Dutch boat and a more international mélange for the pirate crew (Japanese, Brazilian, French, Danish). To achieve this, he recruited the help of all his director friends from around the world who played along and sent him a collection of voices to inhabit this nautical adventure. With humor, love and a good deal of patience, Yves and Remy are extremely excited to be able to share their short film, Pirates!!! The Curse of the Evil Eye.

Created & Directed by : Yves Geleyn & Remy Tornior
Music & Sound Design : François Montmayeur
Voices : Fons Schiedon, Henrik Kring, Laurent Nicolas, Paulo Muppet, Luciana Eguti, Pedro eboli, Antonio Linhares, William Iamazi Ferro.

Hey Jay-Z, Meet the New Dork in ‘Entrepreneur State of Mind’

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Thursday, 11 March 2010

This is a Pantless Knights tribute to our favorite entrepreneurs (who are all "new dorks"). It's a spoof of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind," from the guys behind Grasshopper.com (thank you!). We made it because there's a new type of dork that is cooler than ever. Look at tech entrepreneurs, hipsters, Computer Science Barbie - they're all super popular new dorks! Don't forget to rate, comment and subscribe!

Vodafone zoo zoo ads

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Monday, 8 March 2010

Delightful characters created to portray the many uses of the service, very enchanting shorts. I would love to see these over here in the UK. As the ads roll on and there are many of them the little "people" grow on you as much as their language. Excellent, amusing, informative and memorable.... love the laugh used throughout.

Six months ago, Vodafone briefed its agency, Ogilvy India, to create uncommon characters a common thread to link the ads in the campaign together. Rajiv Rao, executive creative director, South Asia, Ogilvy India, tells afaqs! that the only starting point for the team was that the character had to be simple to a stupefying level. And thus, the Zoozoo was born.

No, they arent animated characters. They are human beings who were made to wear body suits. The design of the characters is such that one gets fooled into thinking it is animation, shrugs Rao, which was indeed the very illusion that had to be created. In a sense, it is live animation! he quips, referring to the fact that it was all shot live.

Prakash Varma, ad filmmaker, Nirvana Films, has directed the commercials, and reveals that the Zoozoos were a big challenge to create. The practical aspects of how they will move, talk, gesticulate and emote were very important. Essentially, costume design and artwork were crucial elements.
