The Making

James Théophane Jnr - Creative Director

"To cut a long story short, after a company-wide upgrade the agency had a lot of old mobiles gathering dust. We took these, built and hoisted a gigantic interactive chandelier/mobile that plays Christmas jingles in our reception.

Details on how we made it and some behind the scenes content are available on my blog: theophane.co.uk/mobile-mobile. Mobile Mobile has been made as a semi-permanent hanging (exhibition) space. In January the mobiles will be replaced with another hanging media, then updated month in, month out. Mobile Mobile is just one in a line of many great lo-fi art/build concepts; from the Design Museum's Aquarium, Digital By Design, Troika and The Cloud, the Printer Bleeping Thingy (I can't remember who did it), all the great work by W+K, and of course, AKQA's wonderful microwaves from last Christmas."

Commissioned by: PostPanic / Client: Nike / Year: 2009

The film embodies the evolution of the shoe and its benefits, rendered in a three-dimensional graffiti-like sculpture that evolves from Classic Style to Performance. The sculpture consists of hundreds of objects, each derived from elements of the shoe.

Elli Fordyce – It ain't over...

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Sunday, 20 December 2009

Twelve months later and I've got to know Elli a little more, not just with the content of the articles, but with the conversations that went on behind the scenes. She has met some of the greats in the jazz world. Overcome obstacles, changed careers many a time and re-introduced herself back into the world of music at the age of 71. If I had half her story to tell I would be more than content. The image below is based on this re-introduction and follows the theme of "phoenix".

Want to know more, start with article "Still very cool" and get reading. Elli thanks for taking part and taking the time out over 2009.

After 11 months of questions, what do you feel as you read the words back?
Re-reading our first piece, I think it’s pretty thorough and I like it, except for where I pieced some of it together awkwardly with the new writing.

Reading it reminded me of an answer to your October question, which I then stopped to draft. I remembered assuming that first collaboration would be our only one, and I fleshed it out accordingly. At that point, I also mentioned some possibilities at the time which didn’t develop much. I also noticed that I was much more naive in January, had taken some inappropriate advice, and that I’m much better-managed, better self-managed and more knowledgeable now. This understanding lead to drafting the answer to your November question.

After re-reading all our pieces, I’m amazed at the quality of the work we’re synergistically doing. Your questions are so insightful and profound and I’m very happy with my responses (except for the typos missed while proofing – fresh eyes would help, something I’ll arrange if there’s no drastic improvement evident). Writing the pieces has often helped with a forthcoming interview, to counsel friends about their issues and/or to be more productive in my life-coaching work. I should probably re-read these periodically and take my own advice more seriously (LOL). The art work is so GORGEOUS and BRILLIANT and, though I’m not visually-oriented, the interplay between those concepts and the Q&As is stunning. Once again, thank you, Rajesh, for this opportunity. I hope we create many more in the series and that at some point it has broad distribution.

Homunculus: Behind The Cleanup

by R27 CREATIVELAB

The Hydra team assembled an entire still-life spread; fruits, cheeses, flowers, fish, and an uncooked pheasant. They then sealed it off in a 6x6 foot plexiglass box. 3 DSLrs, set at varying angles, were set to shoot a frame every 5 minutes for 11 days.

Four brave souls armed with masks, gloves, trash bags, and a fleet of air fresheners took on the task of breaking down the rancid set.

This is behind the cleanup.

Homunculus

by R27 CREATIVELAB on Tuesday, 15 December 2009

Humble is proud to present, Homunculus, the first of an annual series of experimental films by our in-house directing collaborative, Hydra. Conceived of and directed by Sam Stephens, Homunculus is a dark and twisted fable of spontaneous generation and untrammeled id. Taking its title from the Latin word for "Little Human", the piece is an associative mashup between the two concepts behind the word: The first being middle-age alchemical beliefs that "little men" could be spontaneous generated from dead or decaying matter. The second being Carl Jung's usage as a personification of pure id. These ideas, combined with our love of Dutch still life's "beautiful decay," sowed the seeds for this unique little monster of a film.

Meanwhile, co-director Chris Mauch began to design a series of "little men," some cute and cuddly, some not so much. In Maya, Chris and our team of volunteer animators and modelers began to build and rig the creatures.

Over the course of 4 months, in between jobs and on weekends, Sam, Chris, and the team pieced together the sometimes funny, sometimes disturbing madcap narrative --a mixture of Tex Avery cartoons and H.R. Giger inspired body horror.

True to its subject, and to the surprise of its producers, what was to be a small 30 second blip organically grew into an entire HD short film. With the completion of the 12-tone score by Koven Smith and the surround sound mix by Joe Muiccio, we're pleased to premiere our furry little labor of love. Please enjoy...hopefully on an empty-ish stomach.
